Start of previous snooker season was outstanding for the former World Snooker Championship winner, England’s Shaun Murphy. He was able to reach the semi-final stage of the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament where he lost to eventual winner, compatriot Stuart Bingham by the score line of 6-2. A superb start in the 2011-12 Snooker Season boosted his confidence during his run in the circuit.
The Englishman continued his good from in minor ranking snooker events like the 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC), Premier League Snooker (PLS) and the Championship League Snooker (CLS) and was able to grab a strong position in the season. He did claim some of the minor titles but could not win any major ranking event. The Magician claimed a non-ranking snooker event of 2011 Brazil Masters after beating former World Snooker Champion Graeme Dott by the score line of 5-0.
Murphy had high hopes from the 2011 UK Championship and he played tremendously making his way to the quarter-final stage where Ricky Walden put an end to his run. However, he did not lose his focus and hit the final clash of the 2012 Masters but still failed to clinch the title.
His major target was the third crown, the 2012 World Snooker Championship. He was up against Wales’ Jamie Jones in the opening round and had a tussling game against the Welshman. Jones showed great determination and was able to beat Murphy by a close score line of 10-8. In a recent interview with the Pro Snooker Blog, Murphy relived his Crucible memories and hailed Jones for his impressive game.
He said, “The most impressive thing about him I thought was into the second week where he lost in the quarter-finals and I saw him the morning after at the Crucible when I was back there doing some filming. He was just leaving the Crucible and I congratulated him on a good run to the quarters.”
The Magician added, “He was so exuberant about how much he had enjoyed the game, how great a time he’d had and how he couldn’t wait to get back on the table. That showed to me the qualities of somebody who was keen and excited and wanted to play.”
Murphy is now on his new season run and is hoping for another positive outcome from the major ranking snooker tournaments.
